Consider standards before renovating kitchen

Topeka Capital-Journal, The, Nov 8, 2008

In the kitchen

When building or renovating a kitchen, carefully consider placement of major appliances and counter space.

Current standards call for a total of 158 inches of countertop frontage, 24 inches deep with at least 15 inches of clearance above to accommodate all uses, including preparation and storage.

A close working relationship between the stove, sink and refrigerator minimizes cooking prep time. The conventional standard calls for the legs of this work triangle to total no more than 26 feet, with no single leg shorter than 4 feet or longer than 9 feet.

Coup Who?

Coup Who?

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), June 4, 2009

THERE’S a revolution afoot.

Not the quiet British type either – more a continental storm the barricades like in 1968.

A Communist leader once made a joke that the British would never storm a railway station because they would queue to buy platform tickets first – well, no more! Regular poster Otis wrote: “The leaders of all three major political parties are trying to bamboozle us again.

“Their protestations of innocence and reform have only one object in mind, they are designed to try to pacify and nullify public anger.

“They still have not realised the depth of mistrust, disgust and outright contempt for MPs now held by the electorate.

“They are trying to spin their way out of it and hoping that they can delay and bluff it out, that time will weaken the revulsion felt at present and we the public will relapse into our normal soporific state of apathy.

“Every member of Parliament who has any length of service is guilty by association.

They are experienced politicians who must have known what was going on around them, yet kept their mouths shut and did nothing.

“We should accept nothing less than a complete overhaul of every facet of Government and bring in reforms which will make MPs represent us, the electorate rather than themselves as a party.” StephB has his own views: “One small qualification..’They are experienced politicians who must have known…’ or had they their heads too far down to ‘see the picture’, or maybe we have simply been over-estimating their intelligence? “I heard on the radio this morning someone mooting that political parties be funded from taxation! When what we really need is a dismantling of the party system! As for MPs being ‘rewarded properly for their responsibilities’, I am all but speechless.” He’s speechless after a couple of hundred words I see…

Unclegrumpy has decided it isn’t all that bad: “They’re all nothing but a bunch of self-serving crooks, give ‘em all a right good thrashing.

“C’mon folks, thank heaven we don’t live in Latin America, most of Africa, Asia or France where politicians really do plunder the public purse. British politicians are more amusing than anything else.”

Pledge on loans

Huddersfield Daily Examiner (Huddersfield, England), August 14, 2009

HUDDERSFIELD firms are set to benefit from a bank’s decision to make more money available for loans to local businesses.

Yorkshire Bank said lending to companies in the region would increase by pounds 100m during the next 12 months.

Across the UK, new lending will increase by an extra pounds 1bn in the next year.

This figure comes on top of pounds 2.9bn of new money already been made available by the Bank in the nine months to June, 2009.

Yorkshire Bank, which has six business banking centres in Yorkshire and more than 70 across the UK, said it aimed to ensure that every pound deposited in the area is reinvested back into the local economy in the form of lending to Yorkshire businesses.

Regional director Kath Myers said: “Many small and medium-sized firms are struggling to acquire funding in the current climate.”

Five Tips for Safe Summer Play from the Toy Industry Association

Business Wire, May 22, 2009

NEW YORK — The warm days of summer are fast approaching and kids of all ages will
soon be hitting beaches, parks and backyards to enjoy the outdoor play
that makes the season so much fun. From gardening and building sets to
sidewalk chalk and scooters, and from bubbles and water blasters to
bicycles and skateboards, a broad range of outdoor toys will help to
entertain the young and the young at heart.

“Memorial Day Weekend is a perfect time for parents and kids to pick
their toys for the season and get ready to enjoy more outdoor play,
exercise, and a healthy, relaxed lifestyle,” says Julie Livingston of
the Toy Industry Association.

To help assure that every play date is a safe one, TIA offers parents
the following toy-related tips for a safe, active and fun summer:

1. Pay close attention to the age appropriate guidelines on toy
product packaging.

Age labeling is a safety precaution and is based on children’s
developmental skills and ability at a given age– and the
appropriateness of the toy for that age. Age labeling does not pertain
to the intelligence of a child so you never want to select toys marked
with an age younger than the child’s age.

While shopping at some of the more ‘typical’ stores, it really left us bored and uninspired”, comments Venetia Edakkunnathu, the Product Finder half of the team. “We started looking online and discovered there are a variety of great boutique shops out there, ranging from hip, to modern to eco-friendly, all carrying great stuff. Later as a new mom, I just didn’t have much time to jump online and surf like I used to, thus the idea for CoolBabyGear.com was born.”

Joe, Venetia ‘s husband, an Interactive Consultant, manages the design and development duties of the site. He remarks that “The site is a great starting point to find a lot of really great and unique products online. I also wanted this site to be something for fathers to get a kick out of reading. Our quick irreverent rants help make it a bit more comfortable for design conscious dads to research what was traditionally a more female oriented arena

Targus Universal Wireless Keyboard: a full keyboard in a small package.(PDA Accessory)

Mobile Business Advisor, November, 2003 by Whipple, Larry

I remember watching a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode in which Captain Picard has a short-lived relationship with a new crewperson. In one scene, they’re deep in the Enterprise inside a Jeffries tube because it has the best acoustics. He plays his flute while she unrolls a grand piano keyboard and begins to play. The music was lovely, but nay attention was on her mobile piano. The mobility of the keyboard let her take an otherwise cumbersome instrument places she never could have otherwise.

My PDA always felt a bit like a grand piano–but missing the keys. Without a full keyboard, PDA have had to muddle through with awkward substitutes such as on-screen or miniaturized keyboards, Graffiti, or some other method
